• Apple Named World’s Most Valuable Brand for Third Year in a Row [Mac Blog]
  Millward Brown today released its annual BrandZ study of global brands (via AllThingsD), which found Apple to be the world’s most valuable brand for the third straight year.

  Although Apple topped the list once again, its brand value only increased 1% to $185 million, which is not as impressive as the 84% increase (from $153 million in 2011 to $183 million in 2012) it received last year. Apple rival Google jumped back up to the second spot with a brand value of $137 million (a 5% increase) and Samsung clocked in a 51% increase and a $21.4 million brand value at the 30th spot.

  
  Overall, Millward Brown said that the technology sector was “flat,” declining after 5 years of growth:
  

  Without the surge in Apple and Facebook brand value that helped drive category growth, Technology declined 1 percent in the BrandZ™ 2013 ranking, after five years averaging 8 percent annual category growth.

  Among other top brands, IBM fell down to the third spot with a brand value of $112 million while Microsoft dropped 9% to $69.8 million and Facebook fell 36% to $21 million. Yahoo, which fell out of the top 100 years ago, returned to the 92nd spot with a brand value of $9.8 million.

  While “brand value” studies can be difficult to compare, because of the use of differing methodologies used by those who gather the data can lead to much different results, they can be a good look at marketing and branding trends.

  A header in the email, which was meant to advertise a sale on Call of Duty games, leaked the news: “The critically-acclaimed Star Wars RPG is now available on iPad…”

  As noted by our sister site TouchArcade, the text likely refers to a Knights of the Old Republic game. Aspyr previously released the Mac port of the original KotOR game and has a presence in the App Store, having released its first iOS app, Sushi Mushi, last November.

  As this was an unintentionally released headline, there is little additional information available at this time, but it is likely that more details on the iPad version of Knights of the Old Republic will be available in the near future if the leak is accurate.

  In addition to eliminating much of the white space on the site, Flickr is now displaying in-line photo streams that encompass the majority of the screen and detailed photo-centric profile pages. Flickr has also implemented a slideshow mode to allow its users to flip through photos hands-free.

  
  With the redesign, Flickr is encouraging its users to upload high resolution photos by giving every Flickr user 1TB of storage space for free. That is a marked increase from its former photo storage policy, which limited users’ monthly upload bandwidth and allowed only 200 photos to be visible. Flickr will allow up to 3 minutes of 1080p video as well.

  Apple CEO Tim Cook, CFO Peter Oppenheimer, and Apple’s head of tax operations Phillip A. Bullock will appear in front of the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigation tomorrow. The company issued a statement earlier today in a preliminary defense against the Subcommittee’s accusations.

  
  

  The subcommittee, which previously explored tax avoidance by other multinational corporations using offshore subsidiaries, found similar practices at Apple. In addition, the subcommittee review discovered an unusual tax scheme: Apple’s claim that two key offshore companies are not tax residents of Ireland, where they are incorporated, or of the United States, where Apple executives manage and control the companies. One of those Irish subsidiaries has paid no income taxes to any national tax authority for the past five years.

  “Apple wasn’t satisfied with shifting its profits to a low-tax offshore tax haven,” said Sen. Levin. “Apple sought the Holy Grail of tax avoidance. It has created offshore entities holding tens of billions of dollars, while claiming to be tax resident nowhere. We intend to highlight that gimmick and other Apple offshore tax avoidance tactics so that American working families who pay their share of taxes understand how offshore tax loopholes raise their tax burden, add to the federal deficit and ought to be closed.”

  The full forty-page memorandum (PDF) goes into some detail on the company’s tax strategies, and we will likely hear much more about this at tomorrow’s hearing.

  The meeting at Apple was just the latest of numerous interactions between Apple executives and Turkish government officials as Apple seeks to win the massive tablet contract. A number of Apple executives including vice president for education John Couch traveled to Turkey back in February to meet with Turkish president Abdullah Gül, while Gül had visited Apple in May 2012.

  Ahead of the education tablet bid, Apple is in the midst of a significant push into the Turkish market, having launched the iTunes Store for music and movies there last December and begun hiring for future retail stores in the country.

• Apple and Sony ‘iRadio’ Negotiations Stalling Over Skipped Songs

  CNET is offering some additional information on Apple’s trouble with Sony Music, explaining that the fees to be paid for skipped songs have become a point of contention between the companies.
  

  Apple and Sony Music, the world’s second largest music label, are still trying to hammer out details over how much Apple would pay for songs that people listen to a fraction of and then skip, according to people familiar with the negotiations.

  While Apple’s music service is said to be more similar to Pandora than Spotify, Apple does plan to deviate from Pandora’s rigid station-based listening rules by giving users extended control, like the ability to rewind or skip a song after listening to a small portion of it. Pandora limits its users to 12 skips per day and pays the full royalty rate for each skipped track.

  Apple has faced continual struggles over pricing during negotiations, originally offering to pay just half of Pandora’s royalty rate while demanding more flexibility. The company later agreed to up its offered price, but it may not be willing to make further concessions as an Apple-branded music service offers additional perks that other music streaming sites can’t compete with, such as an established market for purchasing streamed tracks.

  The stalled negotiations between Apple and Sony Music are annoying other labels, who are eager to see iRadio launch. Apple finalized an agreement with Universal Music earlier this month and is close to signing a deal with Warner Music Group, according to CNET‘s sources.
  

  That skipping has become an issue is frustrating executives at the other labels because they see Apple’s free radio service as a potential boon for the music industry overall and are eager to help Apple get it launched.

  Apple was pushing for a summer launch of iRadio, with possible plans to unveil the service at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June, but it is unclear if the company will be able to meet that deadline.

  Haunting Melissa, from Hooked Media Digital and “The Ring” producer Neil Edelstein, is an app that aims to deliver movies on mobile devices in an entirely new way.

  Much like a TV show on iTunes, the film is broken up into segments that can be unlocked by sharing a user’s viewing experience on Facebook, purchasing each episode within the app for $1.99 or paying $6.99 to $14.99 for the entire film. In an interview with Bloomberg, Edelstein declined to comment on how many episodes would be available.

  Edelstein also said that Hooked Media Digital wanted to find a way to present movies and TV on mobile devices as studios have struggled to account for the rise of mobile video.
  

  “The way stories are consumed has changed, so we set out to alter how stories are told,” said Neal Edelstein, founder of Hooked Digital Media, in an interview. “It’s terrifying to studios the drain that these devices have placed on the industry, so we have to find a new way to harness them.”

  Although the film could have been released in Apple’s iTunes Store, providing it through an app gives Hooked Digital Media greater control over the way the content is delivered. It also gives the studio the ability to add additional story elements at any time, providing users with a unique film viewing experience. In 2011, “The Godfather” director Francis Ford Coppola experimented with similar technology in theaters.

• FTC Begins Sending COPPA Letters to App Developers Ahead of July Rule Change [iOS Blog]
  The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has begun sending educational letters to app developers to make them aware of upcoming changes to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) that was updated back in December.

  The two letters [PDF, PDF] inform developers that the restricted collection of personal information of kids 13-and-under has been expanded to include photographs and video and audio with a child’s image, among other things. Previously, only identifying information such as the child’s name, address, and telephone number was restricted.
  
  

  Please note that we have not yet evaluated your apps or your company’s practices to determine if they comply with COPPA as it is now – or as it will be starting July 1, 2013. We are sending you this letter to both alert you to the upcoming COPPA Rule changes and to encourage you to review your apps, your policies, and your procedures for compliance.

  The revised COPPA Rule requires all developers of apps that are directed to children under 13 – or that knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 – to post accurate privacy policies, provide notice, and obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting, using, or disclosing any “personal information” from children.

  App ‘platforms’ like Apple’s App Store and Google Play are explicitly exempted from the law and stores are not required to verify that apps are in compliance with the law; instead, it’s up to individual developers to verify compliance.

• CW Strikes Deal with Apple to Bring Content to Apple TV
  The CW has struck a deal that will bring the network’s content to the Apple TV, reports Deadline. At the company’s annual Upfront Presentation in New York today, CW president Mark Pedowitz announced that the CW’s TV Now applications, which are currently available on Xbox 360 and Windows 8, will be coming to the Apple TV as well.

  “This year we’re reaching more viewers on more platforms,” said Pedowitz, speaking of the deal. “We are reaching our audience everywhere they are, and we want you to be with us everywhere we go,” he went on to say to advertisers at the event.

  
  The CW told MacRumors that the app will function similarly to the company’s Xbox and mobile apps and confirmed that it will indeed be an app located on the Apple TV’s home screen.
  

  It’s a dedicated CW app that will work like our Xbox and mobile and tablet apps – no cable authentication required, full episodes of our shows available next day after air, ad-supported.

  The CW’s TV Now app for the Xbox offers free full streaming episodes of network shows like The Vampire Diaries with limited advertising. The app also includes additional content like previews and cast extras. Currently, Apple sells CW content through its iTunes store.

  While the Apple TV offers apps and digital content from sites like Netflix and Hulu, it does not include apps from television networks. The partnership between the CW and Apple will mark the first network television app available via the Apple TV.

  It is unclear if the CW’s app is part of a larger initiative by Apple to bring additional apps to the Apple TV. The CW is a joint venture between Warner Bros. Entertainment and CBS, one of the biggest U.S. broadcast networks.

  According to the CW, the app is set to launch in the coming weeks, though no exact release date was given.

• Tim Cook to Testify In Front of Senate Committee Over Apple’s Tax Practices
  Apple CEO Tim Cook will testify in front of the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigation next week, Politico is reporting. The subcommittee is attached to the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

  The hearing, titled “Offshore Profit Shifting and the U.S. Tax Code – Part 2” will occur at 9:30AM on Tuesday May 27th in the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

  
  

  The Subcommittee will continue its examination of the structures and methods employed by multinational corporations to shift profits offshore and how such activities are affected by the Internal Revenue Code and related regulations. Witnesses will include representatives from the Department of the Treasury, the Internal Revenue Service, representatives of a multinational corporation, and tax experts.

  Representatives from Microsoft and HP testified on September 12 on the same topic.

  Apple recently borrowed $17 billion in a bond offering, in part to return cash to shareholders without bringing some of its $100 billion overseas cash pile to the United States. If it were to repatriate that cash to the U.S., it would need to pay a more than $13 billion tax bill.

• Apple Blames Book Publishers in E-Books Antitrust Lawsuit
  Reuters is reporting that Apple has responded to the Justice Department’s accusations that the company colluded with publishers to increase e-book pricing, saying that it negotiated with the publishers separately and reached different agreements with each.
  

  But Apple said the publishers had decided, independent of Apple, to eliminate discounts on wholesale book prices of e-books, to sell lucrative hardcover books first to bookstores in a practice called windowing and to take other measures to push Amazon to raise prices.

  In a court filing dated April 26 but released on Tuesday, Apple said it had approached publishers to create an online bookstore that would eventually become the iBookstore and had demanded a 30 percent commission, that publishers would not undercut prices paid to Apple, and that “windowing” be scrapped.

  Apple said that points of contention in early negotiations centered around Apple’s demand for a 30 percent commission and price caps. Apple went on to note that each publisher immediately offered its own counterproposals in what Apple described as “tough negotiations.”

  The company also claims that before it entered the market the publishers were engaged in a battle to break Amazon’s grip on the low-cost e-book market, with Apple laying the blame for any potential collusion on the publishers.

  The lawsuit was originally filed in April 2012 and included HarperCollins, Simon and Schuster, Hachette Book Group, Macmillan and Penguin, but the Justice Deparment settled with the publishers and has since concentrated on Apple. Recently, CEO Tim Cook was ordered to testify in the case.

  Unlike similar movie library apps like TodoMovies, Limelight focuses on social interactions, allowing users to follow one another to share movie recommendations among friends. It is similar to Goodreads, the social cataloging site that lets its users share book recommendations and reviews.

• Google to Unveil Streaming Music Service at Google I/O Tomorrow
  Google is set to announce a new music subscription service tomorrow at its annual Google I/O conference, reports The Verge, having finalized deals with Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment., and Warner Music Group.

  The service is said to be a direct Spotify competitor, offering up songs on demand that can be streamed to a computer or mobile device for a set monthly fee.

  Though Google has had an existing music service since 2011, it operates in a manner that is similar to iTunes, allowing users to purchase individual songs and albums. It also has a “locker” that lets users store digital entertainment collections.

  Pricing information on the new service has yet to be released, but The New York Times claims that Google will not offer a freemium ad-supported tier.
  

  Google’s streaming service will not include a free tier, according to the people briefed on the plans who did not want to be identified discussing confidential matters. The subscription rate was not known, but is expected to be similar to that of Spotify and other competing services, like Rhapsody and Rdio, which tend to charge about $10 a month.

  While Google’s streaming music service will be released ahead of Apple’s rumored iRadio service, the two are fundamentally different. With a Spotify model Google will be able to offer songs piecemeal, while Apple’s iRadio is said to closely resemble Pandora, which plays a selection of random songs based on user preference. As of last week, Apple was still in negotiations with music labels.

  Google’s subscription music service will be connected to Play, Google’s digital content distribution platform. The Wall Street Journal notes that the upcoming streaming music service is separate from a second paid music subscription service in the works from YouTube, which would give users access to music videos and audio-only songs.

  Google I/O is set to kick off tomorrow with an opening keynote at 9am PT at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

• Apple Continues Building iWork Team, Adds New Job Listings
  Apple has been beefing up its iWork team since early February, and has posted several new job listings in recent weeks.

  The latest job posting, which was added this morning, seeks a software QA engineer. As noted by Apple Bitch (via AppleInsider) the position specifies that the engineer will work on “the next generation of Desktop, Mobile, and Web application/services.”

  
  Apple is currently hiring a number of employees for its iWork team, including three QA software engineers, a Production Specialist, a Technical Production Ninja, a Verification Engineer, and a Visual Motion Designer.

  The company also has a job listing for a HiDP Image Specialist, a position that requests a person who will prepare “approved artwork and specifications for engineering implementation on both Retina and non-Retina display devices,” suggesting that the next version of iWork will support Retina devices.

  Apple’s iWork suite includes Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, for both iOS and Mac. The software is overdue for an update as it was originally released in 2009 and has seen only minor improvements since that time.

  Facebook today updated its iOS app with more options when viewing photos, including sharing a photo on a users’ timeline, saving a photo to the iOS camera roll, or saving a photo as a profile picture, in addition to other improvements.

  Prior to the 6.1 update, users could only Like, Comment or tag users in a photo within the iOS app.

• 1Password Update for iOS Features Improvements to 1Browser, Sharing and Search [iOS Blog]
  AgileBits has updated its password management app 1Password to version 4.2, adding several enhancements to 1Browser along with improvements to search and sharing.

  Go and Fill bookmarks have been added to the 1Browser on the iPad, along with the ability to use the Strong Password Generator. An auto-submit option for login filling has also been added.

  The update includes the ability to share items through Messages or email, and the app’s search capabilities have been improved to allow for expanded search results across all fields. Here’s a full rundown of the changes:
  

  1Browser
  – Added Go and Fill bookmarks in 1Browser on iPad.
  – Added the ability to use Strong Password Generator in 1Browser on iPad.
  – Added the ability to auto-submit on login filling.
  – Added fill animations to make it easy (and fun) to see where fields are filled.
  – Added Copy to Clipboard in the Share menu to copy the current URL to the clipboard.
  – Closing the last tab will now direct you back to vault mode.

  1Browser Settings
  – Added 1Browser settings menu.
  – Added the ability to adjust auto-submit and fill-animation defaults.
  – Added the ability to clear the Web Data (eg. Cookies) from 1Browser.

  Sharing
  – Added the ability to share items through Messages or email.
  – Shared items include a special ‘Add to 1Password’ link which allows you to directly add them to 1Password.

  Search
  – Added the ability to expand search results across all fields.
  – Search results now includes the primary URL of the item.

  Other
  – 1PasswordAnywhere (1Password.html) will now display custom fields.
  – 1Password will prompt to open in the web view when launching 1Password with a URL in your clipboard.
  – Improved translations and the addition of Greek.
  – Improvements to Dropbox syncing.
  – Many bug fixes and improvements.
